MPU6050 6-DOF IMU & Complementary Sensor Fusion

MEMS capacitive accelerometers, vibratory gyroscopes, I2C register configuration, gyro drift integration, and complementary filtering.

Prerequisites: Trigonometry (atan2), basic I2C communication, and numerical integration.

1. Overview & Concept Definition

A Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) integrating a 3-axis capacitive accelerometer and a 3-axis rate-of-turn gyroscope with an internal Digital Motion Processor (DMP).

2. Engineering & Industrial Significance

Provides spatial orientation, tilt angle, angular velocity, and inertial acceleration for self-balancing robots, quadcopters, and humanoid motion tracking.

3. Physical Working Principle & Transducer Dynamics

Accelerometers measure both linear dynamic acceleration and static gravitational vector $1g$ using micro-machined capacitive finger structures. Gyroscopes utilize the Coriolis force on vibrating proof masses to measure angular velocity $\omega$. Gyro integration accumulates drift error over time, while accelerometers are noisy due to mechanical vibrations. A Complementary Filter blends high-frequency gyro data with low-frequency gravity-referenced accelerometer tilt.

4. Governing Equations & Mathematical Models

Roll from Accelerometer: $\phi_{accel} = \text{atan2}(a_y, \sqrt{a_x^2 + a_z^2}) \times \frac{180^\circ}{\pi}$
Pitch from Accelerometer: $\theta_{accel} = \text{atan2}(-a_x, a_z) \times \frac{180^\circ}{\pi}$
Complementary Filter: $\theta_k = \alpha (\theta_{k-1} + \omega_y \cdot \Delta t) + (1 - \alpha) \theta_{accel}$ (Typical $\alpha = 0.98$)

5. Practical Implementation

// C++ Complementary Filter implementation for Pitch
float pitch = 0.0f;
unsigned long lastTime = 0;

float updateComplementaryPitch(float accelX, float accelZ, float gyroRateY) {
    unsigned long now = micros();
    float dt = (now - lastTime) / 1000000.0f;
    lastTime = now;
    if (dt > 0.1f) dt = 0.01f; // Prevent startup spike

    float accelPitch = atan2(-accelX, accelZ) * 57.29578f;
    const float alpha = 0.98f;
    pitch = alpha * (pitch + gyroRateY * dt) + (1.0f - alpha) * accelPitch;
    return pitch;
}

6. Common Engineering Pitfalls & Troubleshooting

Frequent Engineering Pitfalls
  • Using raw gyroscope angle without high-pass filtering: Zero-rate bias drift causes the integrated orientation to drift by degrees per minute.
  • Leaving the MPU6050 in SLEEP_MODE: The device boots into sleep mode by default (PWR_MGMT_1 register must be written with 0x00).
Diagnostic & Troubleshooting Checklist
  • Verify device acknowledges on I2C address 0x68 via an I2C bus scanner sketch.
  • If readings are locked at -1 or 32767, inspect SCL/SDA pull-up resistors and check for wire breakage.

7. Applications & Physical Constraints

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS
  • Two-wheeled self-balancing inverted pendulum robots
  • Quadcopter flight stabilization attitude determination
  • Robotic manipulator end-effector orientation feedback
PHYSICAL LIMITATIONS
  • Yaw (heading) cannot be corrected against drift without a 3-axis magnetometer (e.g. MPU9250 or external compass).
  • Susceptible to mechanical resonance from high-RPM drone motors; requires vibration dampening mounts.
