I2C Bus Protocol, Pull-Up Impedance & Arbitration

Open-drain SDA/SCL lines, bus capacitance calculations, clock stretching, start/stop conditions, and multi-master bitwise arbitration.

Prerequisites: Open-drain transistors, RC charging dynamics, and serial timing.

1. Overview & Concept Definition

A synchronous, multi-master, multi-slave, packet-switched, single-ended serial communication bus developed by Philips Semiconductor (now NXP).

2. Engineering & Industrial Significance

Allows connecting dozens of digital sensors, RTC clocks, EEPROMs, and displays using only two microcontroller wires (SDA and SCL).

3. Physical Working Principle & Transducer Dynamics

Both SDA and SCL lines are open-drain/open-collector: devices can only pull lines LOW to ground; external pull-up resistors pull lines HIGH. Communication begins with a START condition (SDA drops LOW while SCL is HIGH). The transmitter addresses a 7-bit slave address followed by a Read/Write bit. The receiver acknowledges with an ACK (pulling SDA LOW on the 9th clock cycle). Multi-master arbitration is non-destructive: if two masters transmit simultaneously, the one attempting to output HIGH while reading LOW immediately loses arbitration without corrupting the message.

4. Governing Equations & Mathematical Models

Minimum Pull-Up Resistance (Sink Current limit): $R_{min} = \frac{V_{CC} - V_{OL(max)}}{I_{OL}}$
Maximum Pull-Up Resistance (Rise Time limit): $R_{max} = \frac{t_r}{0.8473 \times C_{bus}}$
Standard Mode Rise Time Limit: $t_r \le 1000\text{ ns} \implies R_{max} \approx \frac{1000\text{ns}}{0.8473 \times C_{bus}}$

5. Practical Implementation

// Arduino Wire I2C Scanner Utility
#include <Wire.h>

void scanI2CBus() {
    Wire.begin();
    Serial.println("Scanning I2C bus...");
    for (byte addr = 1; addr < 127; ++addr) {
        Wire.beginTransmission(addr);
        byte error = Wire.endTransmission();
        if (error == 0) {
            Serial.print("Found I2C device at 0x");
            if (addr < 16) Serial.print("0");
            Serial.println(addr, HEX);
        }
    }
}

6. Common Engineering Pitfalls & Troubleshooting

Frequent Engineering Pitfalls
  • Omitting pull-up resistors: Many microcontroller development boards lack on-board pull-ups on SDA/SCL, leaving the bus permanently in an undefined state.
  • Excessive cable length: Standard I2C is limited to 400 pF total bus capacitance (typically < 30 cm ribbon cable). Exceeding this rounds the rise time and produces bus timeouts.
Diagnostic & Troubleshooting Checklist
  • Use an oscilloscope on SCL and SDA: If rising edges resemble slow exponential curves rather than square waves, decrease pull-up resistance (e.g. from 10kΩ down to 2.2kΩ).
  • If the bus locks LOW, an uncooperative slave may be stuck during an ACK cycle; pulse SCL 9 times manually to release the bus.

7. Applications & Physical Constraints

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS
  • Interfacing IMU sensors (MPU6050, BNO055)
  • Real-Time Clocks (DS3231) and I2C OLED displays (SSD1306)
  • Digital temperature sensors (BMP280, MCP9808)
PHYSICAL LIMITATIONS
  • Limited throughput: Standard Mode (100 kbps), Fast Mode (400 kbps), Fast Mode Plus (1 Mbps). Not suitable for camera video feeds or high-bandwidth audio.
  • Vulnerable to capacitive cross-talk and industrial EMI.
